Meet Mira
One of our special student volunteers is Mira, who started volunteering last year. From her first day, Mira was a stand out. She glides through the dining room with purpose. Her poise and her loving attitude are just two things that make this young volunteer special. She is a hard-working student and she has entertained our guests with her singing and piano playing. Mira now volunteers whenever her schedule permits. We asked her what makes her come week after week and she said she feels better after being in our dining room. More “happy and bright” were her words. She loves serving our Chinese guests because she can practice her Mandarin. She said she tends to be shy, and being at TOP has made her put herself out there. Mira has a great sense of style even in her TOP apron which she always accessorizes with a different brooch. She will be graduating from Sea Crest this June and is off to high school where she is excited to meet new people and have new opportunities. Thank you Mira for being the absolutely wonderful person you are. YOU make our dining room happy and bright. We can’t wait to see where life takes you.
Promoting volunteerism is a vital part of our Table of Plenty mission. We are fortunate to have many volunteers of all ages from 12 to 80+, including student volunteers from several middle and high schools. Five years ago, Table of Plenty started a partnership with Sea Crest School aimed at engaging middle schoolers with volunteerism in their community. Starting in 7th grade, students have the opportunity to volunteer once a month in our dining room. This partnership has been a meaningful win for all involved. Not only does it bring JOY to our diners who love seeing young faces, but it engages students away from the classroom and the constant technology and screens. Watching these young adults blossom in confidence and empathy is remarkable. We believe that volunteering early will help to build up a lifetime of giving back.
